A search for an armed man in Melbourne has been scaled down, after police admitted
the sound of gunshots may have been a car backfiring.

A massive search was launched in the Reservoir area of the city this morning when three
people fled from a stolen car.

A police dog, a helicopter and several ground units were brought in when officers believed
they'd come under fire.
