NSW: Carr lends support to Kooragang Island airport site

A plan to build Sydney's second international airport in Newcastle has received a boost
from New South Wales Premier BOB CARR but was rejected by members of his own party because it
threatens world class wetlands.

Mr CARR says Abigroup Ltd's proposal to build the airport at Kooragang Island deserved
serious consideration.

But the state member for the seat of Newcastle, Labor's BRYCE GAUDRY, rejected the plan
outright, saying it would damage wetlands near the island in the middle of the Hunter …
