A recent letter to the editor referred to buses as ``. . . inefficient polluters.'' The writer used the argument in support of an argument for a light-rail system. Buses are surely big and obvious, and it is true that diesel engines sometimes smoke. All internal combustion engines produce emissions. But the pollution allegation deserves closer examination.
