BRIDGE FUNDING GREETED WITH EAGERNESS, ANXIETY.(Local)

Schonowe Fire Co. Lt. Peter Sylvester said he was elated to learn Tuesday that $1.02 million has been appropriated by the state to replace the closed Gordon Road Bridge.

However, Sylvester said his new major concern is whether the delay in passing a state budget could slow bridge construction.

"My biggest fear is that a lengthy delay in getting the process started might mean we'll have to face another long winter without the bridge," Sylvester said.

He has been the prime mover at the grass-roots level to replace the more than 100-year-old span, closed since December, which crosses Conrail tracks.
